Maggie’s Acceptance Address

August 23rd, 2010 · No Comments

Past District Governor “Yumi” Espina.

Assistant Governor Ed Limtingo.

Past and Present District Officers.

Past and Present Club Officers.

Club Members.

Visiting Rotarians.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

12 months ago I changed office from Treasurer to Secretary. At the Induction I could never have imagined that tonight I would be inducted as President of the Club.

Sometimes things happen which cannot be foreseen. Situations change and President Elect Ethel Poley has since found that it is logistically impossible for her to carry out her duties as President, due to her husband working, and living away. So here I stand as Club President, a little nervous but preparing for my term of office, well aware that eyes are on me being the First Lady President of the Club. Fortunately I do have the pledged support of our Charter President and Past Presidents, but I know that anything I may say tonight can come back and bite me next year, therefore I must be careful in what I promise.

3 years ago my Husband, Past President Dave, in his Induction Acceptance address mentioned the importance, the positives and negatives of words beginning with the letter “P” appertaining to Rotary. During my time as Treasurer and Secretary I have realized the importance of words beginning with the letter “F”

Firstly, Rotary International is a Fraternity which means that we are all Brothers and Sisters with 1 goal to help those less fortunate than ourselves within a four way test.

Secondly and equally importantly we need Funding and Finance to support our ambitions. Our annual contributions are only P7,000. therefore Funding and Financing are important to us as a Club to realize our goals. I would like to re-introduce weekly fund raising in the Club, beginning with a raffle tonight. Please support generously because the prizes have been donated.

The third very important “F” word is for The Foundation. The Rotary Foundation is there to provide a fund for a Global Project, which presently focuses on the Eradication of Polio in the World. I will encourage Members and friends to contribute to the Foundation,

Either by direct donation or contributions in the cans through the“Million Peso” project.

Every Rotarian Every Year or E.R.E.Y. as it is known is something we hear about with regularity. To encourage Members to make donations to the Annual Giving Fund I will personally match all donations made by non Paul Harris Members during my term.

Another “F” word is Fellowship. It is time we bought back the same Fun in Fellowship that we used to enjoy, and remove the Feuding and Fighting in the Club that has decimated our Membership during the past 3 years. This is, however, not the time to dwell on negativity.

There are projects ongoing which were initiated during the time of Past President David Poley. The Feeding program, known as the “The Meal Dream” will enjoy our sponsorship until May 2011, by which time the project will have received around P45,000.

Likewise our successful “Million Peso Project” to support The Rotary Global Polio Eradications Project, jointly with local community projects will be extended during my term. To date they have collectively supported these projects by nearly P7,000. Both ongoing projects are attributed to Past President David Poley.

There are many other words beginning with the letter “F” that are beneficial to the Rotary Movement.

However, I will finalize by saying that we need to move Forward, but in going Forward we must Foster all that has proved to be positive and turn away from that which has been negative and damaging to Rotary.

I hope that in 12 months time I can hand over a Club which is both greater in Membership and more financially secure to my successor.

Thank you all for your attendance this evening and Thank you all for listening to me tonight.

President David Poley’s Valedictory Address 1st July 2010

August 23rd, 2010 · No Comments

As you know Past President Chris myself and President Elect Ethel sat down two years ago with a vision to alter the course that the club was taking (that is not a criticism of the past by the way) but we were trying to effect generational change and freshen up the focus of the club. Two years down the line have we achieved that? not quite yet, but new players and ideas need time to bed in and from where I sit it looks very promising and fills me full of confidence.

This year has been a year of many firsts for the club, it has always been my belief that the programme is vitally important and we need your collective effort to achieve our goals. I want to thank you all for your effort and success in achieving more than 20 Citations and certificates and several awards by our District not to mention the President of Rotary International’s “President’s Citation”. This could not have been done without your support.

Fundraising what can I say about that Lots of Firsts? International projects have really been the main focus for our fund raising activities this year. With the remaining funds from Italy, our coin drop donation and Book donations Maggie has a good foundation to start her new year. Our Priority Project to get finished should be our World Community Service water Project.

Internationally we have received support from at least 5 different Countries to do the projects we have achieved. You need to raise money to spend money and they certainly have done that I hope all of you will support the incoming team in fund raising as you have doing my year.

Maggie who contributed so much, I was always amazed that we could produce such accurate minutes, well done, we should be proud of what was achieved.

Dave West our Past President Thank you for baring with the implementation and new methods involving our reports Thanks to Damien Dwyer the process I know was a learning curve but well needed for the club .. Thank you both.

The Community Service committee had yet again another good year with solid performance from that committee that gained our club a lot of recognitions in the district. Well done team.

Rotary Foundation despite all the problems with matching grants Our Club as a whole has Achieved several Paul Harris Fellows 6 of which are current members 2 of them this yea, David and Maggie West that makes 50% of our members. As a whole our club since being founded has made a substantial donation of more than $25,000.00. Great job for a small club please give yourselves an applaud.

Attendance and Membership has been an ongoing problem, this year despite membership council being very generous with LOA and relaxed about attendance in particular, frankly I think that in these changing times we will just have to live with that. We have lost a few members and recruited two despite being complimented on the style and success of our recruitment methods.

It may be that numbers are not everything it is much more important to have quality, when I see the enthusiasm and commitment of our newer members I am greatly encouraged and am certain they can continue to develop and build on the clubs past activities and successes in this ever changing world.

Yet again I am proud to say our internet marketing and our website continues to grow and I with the assistance of new incoming Secretary Rotarian Steve Meacock and Past President Chris ensured that our notable events have been publicized and in the Press with lots of photographic evidence. Prospective new member nights have been held but our crop has not been as the best as in recent years although the quality was just as good. We definitely have the right formula perhaps our seeds were not watered sufficiently this year.

For any member who feels that they deserve a mention and I have not done so, your omission is not intentional and I apologize, please believe me when I say that I am very grateful for your support and efforts.

This all sounds like a huge multinational corporation but it does give a flavour of what is involved in running a successful club these days. It is only when you get behind the scenes that you fully realize what is involved as President the issues and personalities with all their differing angles. Thankfully you have the Council for support and a number of Past Presidents for advice. I must also thank Charter President Udo for his support, counsel and continued enthusiasm and President Elect my wife Ethel for her quiet support behind the scenes.

Over the past eighteen months each and every one of you has played your part to ensure that the club has had a successful year. We have both raised and distributed record sums of money this year; personally I do not believe that is the real criteria for success or indeed raising the numbers in the club. It is my view that a happy and effective club is usually a working club and that it should be a broad church to cater for all the personalities and interests. By doing this we can maximize the good that we do in the local, national and international arena and at the same time have fun and build up rewarding relationships with each other, “Service Above Self” does mean something. During this time I have received numerous emails saying that for one reason or another, a member has not been able to contribute and participate as fully as they would have wished. Please let me assure everyone that their contribution be it big or small has been much valued.

In summary I believe the club has had a very successful year thanks to you all. We have been very innovative with all our Firsts. I believe that the program’s for next year building on what has been achieved this year along with new innovative ideas bodes well for a successful year under the incoming President Maggie West’s leadership.

Finally and most importantly to you the members of the Rotary Club of Central Mactan it has been an honour, privilege and experience to be your President that you have afforded me, during my year I have tried to live up to the ideals of this club and Rotary.

Fellow Rotarians I commend to you Rotarian Maggie West President of the Rotary Club of Central Mactan for 2010/11.

Past District Governor Yumi Espina; please do us the Honor of Charging our new President.
